Sounds of Social Distancing | David Parry
Playlist |
One of the joys of the music profession is having intense moments of professional collaboration with someone followed by years of no contact and then a job comes up in which you regain that contact and carry on where you left off, almost as if it were yesterday. This month’s Playlist has been put together by David Parry, who has so far conducted two operas for The Grange Festival, Mansfield Park in September 2017 and Il barbiere di Siviglia in 2018. La Cenerentola this, now next, year is next. We first came across each other when he occasionally played for my singing lessons with the inimitable Rupert Bruce-Lockhart, my teacher of a decade or so from when he was 83 until shortly before his death.
Every lesson with Rupert was an event, filled with operatic anecdote and outrageous assertion. He once shouted out from the stalls at Glyndebourne to the stage in his declamatory voice “I cannot understand a word you are singing”, heard by the entire auditorium! David and I then occasionally performed together, most recently in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Oviedo in northern Spain. And then it was my pleasure and privilege to be able to invite him to work at The Grange. His choices of both music and performer are wonderful.
Happy listening!
