Sounds of Social Distancing | Week 8

As we progress, I am struck by how all these musical choices reveal such a panoply of imagination, craft, joy and desperation. I can think of no other time in history when musicians were not able to practice their craft for so long. And the possibility also of this privation extending well past the liberation of most other members of society is stark. Music lives only in its performance. The practitioner is the equal of the creator. The eradication of much of the world of the performing arts looks more possible every week.

But we can at least revel in the accomplishments of our predecessors. This week I offer you jazz, musical theatre, opera, oratorio, symphony, English and German song, soul, tango, a Belgian confessional chanteur, and ending with choral magnificence.

This week two of our operas should be being rehearsed on stage at The Grange, all gearing up to open in 9 days’ time. I have included an extract from one of them (La Cenerentola). On that day, June 5th, we thought we would invite you to celebrate the opening of the Festival from a distance. One of our past successes, Candide (2018), starts streaming at 6pm that evening on OperaVision , and will be available to watch for free for a month.

But we would also like to issue an invitation for a pre-performance drink on zoom, also for that evening, for which we would suggest formal attire (at least from the waist up) and a glass of something bubbly in hand.

You will receive an invitation for this nearer the time. It will be on a first come-first serve basis, limited to something like 100.

More about this when details become clear.
