While running the risk of annoying as much as giving a little pleasure, I am pleased to offer a second Grange Sounds of Social Distancing Playlist.

I do hope you are finding ways at this unprecedented time to discover nuggets of joy and fun against the constant pall of dread and worry.

It is ironic that music demands close social proximity to be able to function, and that is absolutely something we cannot do, in spite of the uplifting remote online performances we have been enjoying. But at least most pieces of music yet conceived have been recorded, or at least those that should have been recorded. To be able to listen to some of them does certainly lift the spirit and divert the mind, if only for a short while.

And I hope that those of you who play or sing anyway are doing so while stuck at home. Bravissimi! Perhaps we should have a post-Corona Play/Sing from scratch at The Grange so you can show off these hours of practice!

I am ridiculously and rather weirdly proud of having once, as part of a Radio 3 Interview with Joan Bakewell, having this famous track played on the Third programme. Patricia Hughes (if anybody remembers the doyenne of that station with her deliciously smoky and lived-in announcer’s voice) would have had a fit. What a thought. This is a song in which to let yourself go. It’s also one of the most astonishing spontaneous improvisations (by all accounts) I know.
